Once you have decided on a design that you are happy with, it's well to be aware in advance of all the detailed steps of the construction...
Steps in the Construction
With a renovation, there will be preliminary stage of demolition. Asbestos may have to be removed and only qualified people can do this. Your bathroom will be out of action for some weeks (toilet about two weeks). If necessary, you will have to hire a mobile bathroom.
Walls may have to be straightened. Basic carpentry may have to be done to affix villaboard and to support plumbing fixtures and items such as towel rails and shelves.
- All behind-wall electrical and plumbing work then needs to be done prior to the walls being sheeted with waterproof villaboard.
- Drainage pipes will be installed to suit the new fixtures. If your house is highset and access under the floor of the bathroom is achievable this is a relitivley inexpensive excercise, however if you require fixture positions to be moved on the ground floor of your house (concrete slab) this can add a considerable cost the the bathroom. The concrete floor will need to be cut and excavated out to allow access to existing drainage pipes. Once the new drainage pipes have been installed they require an inspection by the BCC Plumbing department (BCC fees apply). A pest treatment is then required, we recommend TERMIMESH they use a non toxic white ant barrier. After the Termimesh has been installed, the existing Concrete slab needs to have Dowell bars drilled into it, to support the re-instated concrete slab.
Plastering will be required to smooth joins etc. and prepare walls and ceilings for painting as opposed to tiling.
-

As or if required, a hob will be built up over the outside edge of the tray.
A waterproofing service will be called at this stage to seal all wet areas with a membrane.
Tiling can then take place.
After tiling, the precise dimensions of the shower screen will be known. This can then be manufactured and installed on arrival.
The new plumbing fixtures can then be installed.
New electrical fittings can be installed.
-
Finally, mirrors, shelves, toilet roll holders, vanity and other furniture can be installed.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
**********As with any renovation work there is always the unknown factor of what is behind the walls of your existing bathroom. We have had some nasty surprises in the past with bathroom walls in old houses. The worst example we have seen was a house in which all the bathroom walls were constructed out of wood from old timber pallets. While every effort is made to provide an accurate quote sometimes the unexpected can happen like the above example, if this does occur all extra costings are fully itemised and communicated to the owner prior to the extra repair work being carried out.**********
